Mother's Day Call, a Talk, and a Testimony

May 15, 2017

Hello Family and Friends,

I had a wonderful time speaking with everyone on Skype.  I didn't expect that Dad would have gotten on Skype to talk to me before the family.  I wish I could have talked with him longer. This week went well. Last Monday, our car got ruined by a hail storm. It was a Chevy Cruse.  It was replaced for us with a 2017 Toyota Corolla.  This new car has a USB port for us to play song with it.  It had never been driven until me and Elder Gubler got it.  Most people in the area got damage from the hail. Some members in the ward even said there was a small tornado in their trailer park during it.  I'm not kidding. I have attached a copy of a talk that I gave and my testimony that I bore a few weeks ago.  I heard from the family that the move is going well and Alex made a beast of a computer. I hope everything goes well with getting the family ready to move.  I don't know when I will meet with President Gifford, but it should be roughly around a week before the 6th of next month.

Hello Everyone,

I had a good week. It is great that the family is getting so close to going back to Utah.  I heard about the birthdays from Mom, thank you for sending the pictures. Tell Ben, Evelyn, and Abby Happy Birthday from me.  Lately I have been having problems getting up in the morning. I've just been having a hard time going to bed. I just haven't been getting tired at 10:30. It was ok when Elder Holland was here, but Elder Gubler has been letting me sleep in. I just need something to get me tired when it gets closer to go to bed time. I haven't had any talks with my mission president this week, but he had me do an online survey today for him and I think that was a part of the process of getting reassigned. I will let you know if anything changes. We went to cleaned some Black Mold for service this week and had some good lessons with investigators, but nothing else new. We do have some good investigators and they are close to baptism. They are probably going to be baptized after I'm gone on June 6th.  Can someone also try to get me Rose's mailing address?  I want to send her letters too and I don't have it.  I won't be emailing you until Tuesday next week due to Memorial Day.  Love you all.

Missionary example

Goodmorning. I have been asked today to give a talk today about missionary work. I wanted to make this talk more personal to me so I have decided to do a talk on how missionary work sets an example. As a missionary, I wear a nametag that states I am acting in place of Jesus Christ. If I am to act in place of the savior, then I need to be like him like how it was commanded. He had set the example for how we can gain salvation and to receive exaltation after this life and we may not need to pay the price like he did, but we are still asked and commanded to be like and to love like him.

There is a story in the Book of Mormon talking about the wars with the Nephites and the Lamanites. In Alma 60, Captain Moroni was writing a letter to Pahoran who was the Chief Judge of the land at the time. He was angry at Pahoran because he didn’t supply the Nephite armies and many righteous men were killed by the Lamanites. You need to note that in Alma 48:17 Its states “Yea, verily, verily I say unto you, if all men had been, and were, and ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.” This man who is one of the most righteous men in the history of the world, was very angry. But if you look in chapter 61 of Alma, in Pahoran’s letter back to Captain Moroni, he says that there was rebellion in the capital and so he is unable to send supplies, but in verse 9 he says “And now, in your epistle (letter) you have censured me, but it mattereth not; I am not angry, but do rejoice in the greatness of your heart. I, Pahoran, do not seek for power, save only to retain my judgment-seat that I may preserve the rights and the liberty of my people. My soul standeth fast in that liberty in the which God hath made us free.” He stated that he isn’t angry that Moroni is angry with him, but he is happy that he cares for these people and cares enough to yell at him. This is a very great example of being great examples. They were both righteous men, but even with their faults, they were able to teach great lessons and be examples for us in these latter days.

This past Monday (24th of April) I had gotten an Email from a young man in my home ward named Dakota. He was an honors student and one of the best football players at our school and he had magnified his calling in the church and was one of the young men either looked up to or was proud of. He had left on a mission to the Rome, Italy mission before I had left on my mission. He had also returned early from the mission before I had left. I don’t know the reason for his return nor had wondered why, but I had respected his choice to return. He had asked if I was doing well in the Email he had sent. He had also said of how great of an example I was to him. Me? An example? He had said that he always looked forward to seeing me when I passed by him anywhere and just said hi and talked to him. This hit me to my soul that I had inspired this man, one who everyone looked up to.

There is a story in the Bible about a King who went to go collect the taxes from his thanes. When one of them couldn’t pay the debt, he pleaded with the King to give him more time. The King gave compassion to this thane and removed the dept. Shortly after this event, the same Thane went to go and collect the tax from his underlings when one of them pleaded like he did to the king, but the thane wouldn’t forgive him. When the other thanes heard about this, they reported it to the king and the king called him to his palace. The king had questioned why this thane didn’t show compassion. The king had put the Thane in prison and gave him back the debt. The example portrayed in this story sets one of the examples for how we will be able to return to our heavenly father.

The best example we can show to everyone is the 2 great commandments which are to love god with all thy heart, might, mind, and strength, and to love thy neighbor as thyself. If we can follow these two commandments, and follow the examples of the people in the scriptures and in the stories of the church, then we will be living how we are supposed to live, and I leave this with you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Personal Testimony

Goodmorning. I want you to look in the hymn book at hymn 5. The hymn is “High on a Mountain Top”. If you look at who wrote the text, the name is Joel Hills Johnson. He was my ancestor, my 5th great grandfather. The story behind the hymn is that he lived in Millcreek Canyon in Utah which is not very far from Salt Lake City. Every month he would hike down the mountain with a wagon to pay his tithes and offerings at the bishop’s storehouse. He would know he was safely down the mountain when he looked up behind him and see the flag that had been posted up at the top of ensign peak. One day as he was resting beside the wagon waiting for the line to the bishops storehouse to go down, he was pondering that flag and what it meant to him, he began writing about that flag. Later on, he showed the poem he had written to his friend John Taylor. He asked to borrow it. Later on, He used that poem and one other for hymns in the hymn book.  His Poem is “High on a Mountain Top”.

If you look at the bottom of the hymn, you can see that there are some scriptures with it. I would like to flip open to Isaiah chapter 2 verse 2-3 and it says “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” This was a prophecy to Isaiah about these last days. I learned 2 things about these verses that I think are important to note. First in a Utah History class that I took in Jr. High, when Utah was being named that the saints wanted it “Deseret” which is Hebrew for “Worker Bee”. It would have been named that, but a politician had spoken out and said it should be named “Utah” after the “Ute” Indians. It was decided to name the state “Utah” people found out that Utah is a Ute word. It meant tops of mountains. Second is that the verse is also said That the Mount of the lord's house. I learned that that Mountain or Mount is a team used for a ruler or something mighty for an example that the German title for a King is also “Bergentrückung” or as translated “Mountain Side” or “Mountain King.” I believe that it states when it says when “the mountain of the lord's house.”

Taking those 2 things in it changes the verse to “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the greatest of the Lord’s houses shall be established in Utah, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the House of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”

This scripture is what had kept me in the church. I was at a low point in the church and this gave me my first real testimony, before it I had the basic testimony of “ I believe because my parents do.” but I know now that this church is true and I hope you get your answer as plainly as I got mine, and I say these things, in the name of Jesus christ, Amen.

Teaching and Service

Its good to hear that you and the family are doing well. My teaching is still not the best, but I hope its getting better. They have been trying to include me with the lessons and I have been doing ok, but not as good as them. We have a few that we are teaching and its going well. No one is close to being baptized, but we are hoping for better in the coming weeks. I still am not able to drive yet. It takes a while for anything to go through at the mission office, plus it makes it harder since the one in charge of the cars was released and the Mission President is sick. Other than those things, the day has been good. We just had 2 big storms that had passed through and we had been protected from them both. My studying is going well. I finished the Book of Mormon a little while ago and I restarted and got to 2nd Nephi chapter 9. I don't really have any spiritual experiences from the past few weeks that I can share right now, but I have a surprise for you that might help. You will be able to see it next week and I will tell you what it is on Sunday.  I will call around 2:30. I am sorry that I won't be able to talk to Dad on Sunday, but I might be able to Skype with you later in the day. At least Dad gets to pick me up on the 6th of next month. I have been getting along with Elder Gubler well, he is ok. Its funny though because he looks like Nicolas Cage. We have been doing some service lately for the Ward Mission Leader, Brother Torres. He needed help cutting down a tree and we try to go to a donation place called the Action Center.

It would be nice if you could send some CD's with some music to me. Alex said he would get me songs, but he has been too busy with work to send me anything. My mission allows things like Trek and Joseph a Nashville tribute. Anything that has to do with the church or has the logo on it. Something lively would be nice, most church songs that I have been listening to have been putting me to sleep. You can send also talks on disk like some from Troy Dunham or John Bytheway, anything like that would be good.

It is great to hear that both Ben and Collin will be advanced in the Aaronic Priesthood and be able to start blessing the Sacrament soon. I hope to be able to do it with Ben when I get back.

Missionary Work can set an Example

Everything is going ok. Nothing is really new with me this week. We had the 1st Counselor of the Mission Presidency visit the ward last Sunday. That was a fun experience, especial since I had a talk that day. My talk went well, it was about How Missionary Work can set an Example.  My new companion Elder Gubler is good. He is from California like Elder Holland was, but he is a little more chill. We get along good. I don't know when I meet with my Mission President again to talk about continuing my mission, but It will probably be later this month. Tell everyone Happy Birthday for me. I haven't asked anyone to use there computer to Skype on Mother's Day, but I will this week and let you know. We don't do a whole lot on P-day, but just chill out. I want you all to know that I am doing much better now than I was when I first came out.  The problem was that I felt that I wouldn't be able to teach since that is what is so focused on in a mission. I came out to serve and help people and it felt like that wasn't what I was doing. I am doing much better and doing more for the ward. I will try my best to continue to follow the rules and I will try to continue to serve.

Its great to hear that you are doing well with the packing. I miss Utah as well, but I am content where I am at now.   I am so happy to hear that Ben is doing well and that he is worthy to become a Priest.  Please just work to make sure that everyone is still growing in their faith and testimony.  Remember that "Faith without works is dead."

Love you all and thanks for all the Support.

Leaps of Faith

Hello Family and Friends,

My week was Ok. I am sick today. Its good to hear that Mom and the kids are getting closer to going home. Ed's Baptism went really well and he is getting more involved in the church.  We had an investigator named Meredith who was supposed to be baptized on Saturday, but it was canceled. She doesn't feel like its her time yet. I met with my mission president last week and the meeting was ok. It's still undecided if I will return home or continue my mission at the end of the two transfers. I plan to continue after this transfer, but it's still in the air.  It is really just up to President Gifford at this point.  We evaluated how I was doing and I don't really know how well I'm doing. I personally think I need to do better. I think I just need to take Leaps of Faith and talk more about the church when I am out and about. I also need to start doing better at tracting. I am obeying all the rules as I am told and I follow the direction of my companion. Just plan for me continuing and I will let you know if things change. My Companion Elder Holland is going home on Wednesday and I will get my new companion tomorrow. His name is Elder Gubler. My week was just as normal. I bought some pies and made some heaven for my companions last district meeting and the other Elders really appreciated it. They called the heaven coyote turds. It was fun.  I plan to make more. Thank you for the support.  I will be staying in the same area this next transfer so don't worry about sending letters to the wrong place. I love you all and I hope you do well. Have a good day and a good week.

Easter Weekend and a Baptism

Hello Family and Friends,
The week went well.  We had our baptism of one of our Investigators this Saturday and he got confirmed this Sunday. His name is Ed.  I will attach a picture of him in the Email. Thank you for the money, it helps a lot. I got the Easter package today and thank you for it.  I got a good lunch on Easter and I felt tired.  I needed the break today. Thank you for the scriptures and I will make sure to highlight them. I will share them here with everyone.  It is a good reminder why missionaries serve and do what they do.

D&C 18:10
Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God;

D&C 18:15-16
15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!

16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!

I love you all and this is the only Email I can send you today because of how late I am getting to the computer. I will talk to you next week.

Service and Soreness

Week 4 went well. I had some awful muscle pain in my arms, but other than that, I'm fine.  I have done quite a bit of service lately. My companion doesn't believe we should do too much service and that we should focus on teaching though. My muscles are hurting from some exercise one of the elders had me do while on exchanges. More of a stiff pain where I can't move and when I try, it hurts. We mostly helped people move out of there homes for service. There are lots of people moving in and out of Denver.  It's good to hear that you got that package of games I got. I got them from a less active member who gave them to me. I'm glad that Ben and Alex are enjoying them.  It's good to hear that Ben is starting to go back into more "active" work.  I got the package you sent to me, it was nice.  I am doing fine out here. It would be nice to send some more treats. It's also great to hear that Mom and the kids are getting closer to moving back to Utah. I spent the week just doing what was normal. One of our investigators is getting baptized on Saturday and we have another one next week. We do a little bit of tracting but only tract when we have nothing else to do because its not the most effective way to find people in the U.S.   But it would work in places like Samoa and Africa. The ward is doing fine and so is my companion.  I will be getting a new companion on the 25th.  We just got a new Bishop yesterday during sacrament.
Here is a video I thought you might like
.

Thank you for the emails and I love you all and I will see you in 7 more weeks.

Church Sleep is the Best Sleep

The third week of my mission was good and I am still feeling good. Today is the 22nd day of my mission. My Companion and the other elders are  nice people. Conference was great. I especial liked the talk from President Uchtdorf when he said "Church sleep is the best sleep". We watched Conference and a two  homes of members and then watched the rest of it at the Stake Center.

I am still writing in my journal. My studying in my scriptures are doing well. I have just started studying in 3rd Nephi and will read more later tonight.  There wasn't anything new this week.  We aren't doing a ton of lessons. We are mostly trying to find people to teach who don't want to religion bash. We do mostly updating the maps to try to round up who is a member and who isn't.  Zone conference was good. I got to meet with the Mission President and it was just a small 5 minute interview. The interview went fine, nothing to report on that. We now have two investigators, Ed is one and Meridith is the other.  They both have baptisms that are coming up.  One is on the 15th of April and the other is on the 22nd of April, so please pray that those will go well.

I just got a new camera today. It was great to hear about you all going back to Utah for a visit. I will continue to pray for Mom and Dad to get jobs there. I am obeying all the rules as best as I can but there are some days that I don't want to get up, but I am doing fine. I just try to remember Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  Tell everyone to start sending Emails!!

Love to you all,

Elder Butler

Week #2

Hello Everyone,

My second week went well. Things are going well with my companion and we even have a baptism coming up of a convert we have been working with, and it will be on the 15th of April. Things were rougher this week with some muscle pains, but everything else has been fine. The muscle pain is gone. It just came from over-exercise. I'm fine now.  Thank you for all the email addresses.  I will make sure to email everyone. Sorry that I don't have any pictures, my camera broke. I will try to get a new one next Monday when I get more money from the mission office and we go shopping again. Chubby's was really good and they gave us some extras to eat, and it's very, very, spicy. We will be watching General Conference at several different places with members and investigators. I will make sure to look out in for when they announce the Tooele Utah Temple. We went this week to an action center to help sort food for people who needed it. There have not really been any surprises.  The mission has been just as hard as I thought it was going to be.  I have gotten half way through Alma since I have been out and I have been writing in my journal every night. I haven't been able to have a discussion yet with my Mission President but I will meet with him again at zone conference. I am glad about what I am doing, but personally its been a struggle. It's hard to keep the spirit with you when you keep thinking about home, but I will be OK.  Don't worry.  Talk to you next week.

Elder Butler's First Week and A Letter from the Mission President

Hi Everyone,

My first week as a missionary was good. I got to meet the Mission President and was invited into his home for the evening along with the new elders. The Mission President is a great guy and follows the rules closely. I have mostly been taught things pertaining to how to teach and the basic rules of the mission. I met the ward yesterday and they are great people and some of the people here in Denver are nice (even though most smoke weed). I serve in a car mission, but we still do a lot of walking. I serve in the Mountain View Ward.  Living a humble life of a mission has been fulfilling and I feel better about myself each day. All week last week and most of this week the ward has signed up to feed us except for tonight. We plan to go to a restaurant that gives free food to Elders named "Chubby's". My new companion is named Elder Holland (not related to the apostle).  He is from California, he is reserved, responsible, and is going home in April. I like the quote you included of Gordon B. Hinckley about when things get hard, "Forget yourself and go to work."  I have a scripture for you about that witch is in Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” I plan to send a package today and I hope you get it before next Monday. I love you all and I will talk to you later.

We also received a letter and some pictures from Josh's Mission President today.  I have included them below.

Josh's Initial Call...A Two Transfer Mission & Reporting for Service

On January 28, 2017 Elder Josh Butler received a two transfer mission call to serve in the Colorado Denver South Mission.

Josh will serve for two months at which point he and his companion will be interviewed by his Mission President to determine how Josh is handling the rigors of mission life, what effect his Autism is having on his ability to serve, and if Josh would like to continue to serve for another 21 months.  If at this point it is determined that Elder Butler is willing and able to continue to serve, his Mission President will resubmit his mission application requesting another 21 months of missionary work.  Elder Butler will then receive a new call possibly to continue to serve in Colorado Denver South Mission, but most likely to serve elsewhere.  He will complete the remainder of his 3 months in Denver and then return home to receive his endowments in the temple and report to the MTC (Missionary Training Center) before heading out and serving his remaining 21 months.

On March 13, 2017 Elder Butler said goodbye and reported directly to the Colorado Denver South Mission to begin his adventure.  Please keep Elder Butler in your thoughts and prayers.
